Aussie takes early lead
3rd April, Riyadh: Andrew Frawley of Australia took the early overall qualifying lead of the 4th Saudi International Open Bowling Tournament underway at Universal Bowling Centre on Saturday.
Andrew Frawley, who had not competed in any tournament since capturing the 2008 ABF Tour Tournament of Champions in January 2009 in Jakarta, amassed a total of 1768 in the opening squad of the qualifying rounds.
The 46-year-old Kuwait head coach posted lines of 188, 247, 197, 258, 229, 197, 215 and 237 to lead the qualifying standings. Debutant, Biboy Rivera of the Philippines, who topped the 7.00pm Squad 2 with 1720 finished second.
Kuwait's Mohammed Kamel finished second behind Rivera and took third overall with 1689 while UAE's Naif Oqab, who was second to Frawley in Squad 1, finished fourth with 1687.
Newly-crowned ABF Tour TOC champion, Ryan Lalisang rounded up the top 5 with 1616. The Indonesian had failed to make the top 32 finals in the Kuwait Open last week, will be hoping to erase his disappointing showing in Kuwait.
The top 4 in the qualifying standings will earn bye to Semi-final Round 2 while positions 5 to 26 will be joined by two qualifiers from the Squad 1 and 2 (who are not in the Top 32), top 2 qualifiers from desperado squad, best Saudi qualifier and top qualifier from the local tournament.
These 28 will have to battle it out in the Semi-final Round 1 where the field will be cut to 12 and will join the top 4 seeded for Semi-final Round 2 in a two-game total pinfalls elimination format.
